Haven’s Toll: Doomslay

Art Director & 2D Artist

Visual Goals — The game took inspiration from dress-up paper dolls, and aims to reflect that feminine qualities and affordances associated with dress-up games. At the same time, the visual experience should signal past the goal of simply being dressed up and subtly convey the underlying dark themes about cults and doomsday.

  • To reflect the dress-up gameplay, I designed the characters and the world to take on a look of flat, colored pencil-illustrated paper cut-outs, with constant pastel tones throughout the different characters to give them all a soft look.

  • Because Haven’s Toll: Doomslay is a dress-up game, I have created both a style guide for the game art, as well as a fashion guide, which includes do’s and dont’s on how to design new clothing items, and mechanic-related guidelines for riggable assets.

Key Art & Game Assets

  • I mainly used Procreate to draw the 2D assets for the game, with the help of Adobe Photoshop for specific assets like UI and large building structures for import into Unity.

  • The process includes incorporating soft pastel colors into where the light hits vs where the shadows are, loosely inspired by the paintings of ballet dancers by Edgar Degas, to keep every asset in the game to a cohesive, soft illustrated style no matter the fashion style the characters are actually wearing.

I also did the game design for Haven’s Toll: Doomslay - See more here.
